US quarter dollars were first issued in 1796. The first version looks similiar to half dimes. Starting from 1804, a "25c" mark was added to the reverse.

It has different versions since it was issued:

• Small eagle reverse (1796)
• Heraldic eagle reverse (1804-1807)
• Capped bust (1815-1838)
• Liberty seated (1838-1891)
• Barber or liberty head (1892-1916)
• Standing liberty (1916-1930)
• Washington (1932 to current)
